When families first look into home care, the alphabet soup of credentials — HCA, LPN, RN — can feel confusing. Understanding the differences helps you match the right level of support without over- or under-buying.
Health Care Assistant (HCA)
HCAs provide the foundation of daily living support. They assist with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and companionship. Many families find that a consistent HCA is exactly what is needed for maintaining independence and reducing isolation.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
LPNs have additional clinical training. In a home setting they can support medication administration, basic wound care, monitoring of vital signs, and more complex personal care. They are a strong choice when there is a clinical component beyond pure activities of daily living.
Registered Nurse (RN)
RNs bring the highest level of clinical assessment and care. They are appropriate for complex conditions, post-surgical recovery, advanced wound care, chronic disease management, and situations that require ongoing clinical judgment and coordination with physicians.
How we match the right level
During a free consultation we listen to the full picture — medical needs, daily routines, family capacity, and goals — then recommend the appropriate mix. Some families start with an HCA and add nursing hours only when needed. Others require nursing from day one. The plan should flex as the situation evolves.
